No Eye Has Seen
Isaiah 64:1-9
Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
1 Corinthians 1:3-9
Mark 13:24-37
I have only lived in this world for 3.5 decades and yet I am amazed at how quickly things have changed through my lifetime. How quickly the culture of our society has transformed and moved itself farther away from biblical principles and towards more of an everything goes society with the exception of Christian tradition. However, if one truly looks back at history and reflects on the then and now of humanity and its place in the world in relation to its creator, in reality not much has changed. Since the day that sin entered the world mankind has chosen to turn their backs on God. Though there have been a few who have remained righteous through these times. However, Satan, the ruler of this sinful world has done all that he can make mankind believe that there is no God. However, this has been proven to be almost impossible for there is an innate desire to seek out our creator. Therefore, when we cannot be convinced that there is no God then the next best deception is to convince us that we can create our own gods out of stone or gold. We can even be convinced that there are many gods who have different roles as well. However, no matter how hard one tries to create their own god in their own image, it just cannot be done.
I was struck by the words in Isaiah 64:4 this week. “Since ancient times (meaning since the world began) no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.” Do you understand what that means. Do you understand the reality of this truth. No one has seen Baal come down from heaven, no one has heard Baal’s voice. No one has seen Zeus come down with his bolts of lightning. The many gods of Hinduism have stepped foot on this earth and have not spoken a word. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call forth fire to burn up a sacrifice on an altar. They spent all day crying out, playing their instruments, cutting themselves to offer personal blood sacrifices and there was only silence. However, when Elijah called out to the one true God in heaven, fire came down and consumed the entire sacrifice, the stones included. Isaiah tells us this truth that no eye has seen any other god in the universe other than the one God who created the universe. There is power in these words of truth.
Isaiah goes on to explain exactly what was going on then and is still going on today in our world. “No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins.” Do you think that there is truth to this statement even in our world today, thousands of years since Isaiah penned these words?
Not one of these false gods have come to this earth to live among their so-called creation. However, only one God has in fact come down to this earth and he is the whole reason for our advent celebration and anticipation. Jesus is God in the flesh and he came down into the world by birth through a virgin girl. He was fully man and yet different in that he knew no sin. No eye has seen and no ear has heard any such thing happening with any other man made god. Jesus is the God of the universe and he came into the world that we may see the face of God, that we may know God in a better way through a relationship with him. Finally, no other god has sacrificed their life to save the lives of all who will believe. He is the only God who speaks, the only God who shows us his face, the only God who reveals his power, the only God who lives with us and in us through His spirit.
The Gospels tell us of a day of when Jesus will return. It is not something that has happened yet but it is something that is promised for he tells us so in his Word through Mark 13. I like to the Gospel of Mark because everything is written so plainly and to the point for us to understand. In Mark 13:24-37, Jesus is talking about his anticipated return. Before he returns their will be a great time of distress that will be cut short. Then on the day following the distress we will see for ourselves; the sun will go dark and the moon will not give light and it will be like the stars falling from the sky. There will be total darkness. Light will be gone from this world. Up until now no eye has seen this happen but a time will come when all eyes will see just that. This will be the time that we are to watch for and be ready. The next thing we will see is Jesus coming in the clouds with great power and glory. We will see God in all of his glory. It will be like this huge light shining forth in the darkness. Then he will send his angels to gather up the elect, all of those who have kept watch and have accepted Him as their Lord and savior. These are all things that the eyes will see.
Jesus then compares to these times to that of a fig tree. By looking at the tree you can determine the seasons. He says that when you see the twigs get tender and leaves starting to sprout out then you can know that the summer time is near. Therefore, similar to that, when we see everything go dark and the stars falling from the sky, we can know that the time is near. No eye has seen these things happen yet but eyes have seen the risen Lord and eyes have seen him perform great miracles, eyes have seen him ascend into heaven and eyes have seen and ears have heard the angels declare that he will return again in the same way that they saw him leave.
We have begone our time of advent this year. It is a time in which we wait and anticipate the Lord Jesus. It is a time in which we remember that he is the only one whom eyes have seen. None have seen any other god besides Him. None have heard any other god besides Him. Let us remember this truth during our advent season as we wait for the Lord.
